Hoan Kiem Lake – A Cultural and Historical Symbol of Hanoi

Hoan Kiem Lake is the heart of Hanoi, renowned for its poetic scenery and tranquil atmosphere. It also stands as a distinctive cultural symbol, representing patriotism and the spirit of unity of the Vietnamese people. In this article, we invite you to explore this iconic destination in greater depth.

Where is Hoan Kiem Lake?

Hoan Kiem Lake is a natural freshwater lake located in the very center of Hanoi. Covering an area of approximately 12 hectares, the lake has been known by various names throughout history, including Luc Thuy Lake, Thuy Quan Lake, Ta Vong, and Huu Vong, before officially being named “Hoan Kiem” in the early 15th century.

The name “Hoan Kiem” (Returned Sword) is closely associated with the legend of King Le Loi returning a magical sword to the Golden Turtle. Since then, the lake has become a prominent historical and cultural symbol of Hanoi.

Situated in Hoan Kiem District and surrounded by well-known streets, the lake offers easy access to the Old Quarter and numerous attractions. With its rich historical value, it has become a must-visit destination, attracting both domestic and international visitors while inspiring countless artistic works.

The History of Hoan Kiem Lake

According to legend, King Le Loi was granted a sacred sword named “Thuan Thien” by the Golden Turtle God. During the resistance against the Ming army, the sword helped him achieve victory. After fulfilling its mission, the Turtle God reappeared to reclaim the sword, giving the lake its name “Hoan Kiem.” This story symbolizes patriotism and the nation’s deep-rooted values of righteousness.

In the past, the lake was called Luc Thuy due to its emerald-green water. In the late 16th century, it was divided into Ta Vong and Huu Vong. When the French expanded Hanoi in 1884, Huu Vong Lake was filled in, leaving only Ta Vong Lake—what we now know as Hoan Kiem Lake.
